A couple more plus size outfit ideas for my “plus size on a budget series!”
This time with plus size wide leg crops.
Plus Size on a Budget – Wide Leg Crops
My “Disclaimer”
I want to prevent some anticipated feedback. So please keep these things in mind:
- “Budget” is relative. Some people easily spend $300 on sunglasses, while other people allocate $300 for their annual clothing budget.
- You may be able to find these items elsewhere for less. These are just some “budget-friendly” finds I have come across. And I typically don’t link to clearance items because they sell out and then people are disappointed. Also, I have no way of linking to thrift stores, but obviously, if you want to check out your local thrift stores, I think that is a great idea!
- Recycle & reuse. As with all of my posts, I hope that you can use the pieces you already have in your wardrobe. Additionally, I assume that you can reuse all of the pieces below in other combinations with things in your closet to create a variety of looks. Meaning, I think it is unfair to judge the expense of one outfit as though that is the only way to wear the pieces.
Plus Size on a Budget – Wide Leg Crops 1
The cropped wide leg is in.
But quite frankly, this silhouette is difficult to pull off for many people, especially if you are of average height or shorter.
My “Summer of the Gaucho”
While I love the idea of plus size wide leg crop pants, they make your legs look much shorter and throw off your proportions.
And I know this from experience!
I had, what I call “the summer of the gaucho,” circa 2005/6.
And let me tell you that while I felt chic and comfortable, in reality, I looked like I had a stubbier legs than I already do and that my crotch was eating my pants.
Fabric literally wadded up between my legs as I walked. It was not a good look!
Lessons Learned
That said, I did learn a few things, such as the weight of the fabric is crucial to prevent that fabric wad.
And that platform sandals are your BFF.
And to keep your tops shorter, cropped even, to balance out your proportions.
And with an apple shape, that becomes more difficult as a cropped top is not a great option for that shape.
So, ideally, you want a high-waisted pair worn with a tucked-in or cropped top.
Bottom line, I’d much rather see a full length wide leg on pretty much anyone. But, at the end of the day, I realize a few things:
- You might be one of those people who happen to look good in a wide leg cropped pant.
- You might not look your best in them, but you give no f*cks. I fully support that stance. Wear what you like, always!
- You want to embrace this trend and using the few tips I provided can make these pants work well enough for you.
The Tips
- So just to reiterate, look for a heavier fabric and a high-waist.
- A “chunky” and taller shoe is better. Pair with platforms, wedges, block or stacked heels.
- Keep your tops cropped or tucked-in.
Plus Size Wide Leg Crops
These plus size wide leg crops are made with a stretch twill with a high rise, which is great news and follows my first tip.
They have a 26.5” inseam.
Outfit 1 Details
The first outfit idea features this plus size gingham top in a bright coral color with ruffle sleeves.
It’s freakin’ adorable! And available in sizes sizes 1X – 4X.
Gingham is a big trend right now! But, it’s also timeless for summer.
Accessories
Oversized sunglasses, which are a preppy gal’s favorite in a classic tortoise.
I have the same in black. Love them! They look very similar to my favorite Celine sunnies.
A bamboo clutch bag with a tortoise bracelet handle coordinates nicely with the tortoise shades.
As for shoes, I opted for wedge sandals with an on-trend braided detail in a rich brown color.
The sandals are 4″ with a 1″ platform.
Make sure you check out my links below for lower and wide width alternatives.
Jewelry
And for jewelry, gold classics: oval thick hoop earrings, layered bracelet, and a coin necklace.
The hoop earrings featured in this look are made by PAVOI, which I’ve mentioned many times before.
You can find PAVOI on Amazon, and must say the quality is really great for the prices!
I actually own a bunch of PAVOI pieces now. I started with a couple of these thick gold hoops in the two larger sizes.
I’m quite impressed.
I also found this coin necklace on Amazon. It’s totally on trend!
The necklace is 20″ long but not adjustable.
FYI, you can check out some more of my picks in my Amazon store.
Jewelry Care
These are inexpensive plated pieces so you might need to “baby” them for longevity.
Avoid the obvious: showers, pools, spraying your wrist with perfume while wearing them.
Store them in air-tight plastic bags, if possible. This will keep the plating from damage and tarnishing.
Perfume & Lipstick
I recently tried this perfume brand, Dossier, and so far, I love them!
I plan to report more on the scents I’ve tried soon!
For this look, I chose is their “Floral Ylang Ylang,” which is inspired by one of my favorite scents: Chanel’s Gabrielle.
Oh la la! An amazing luxury scent at a fraction of the price!
For the lip, I chose a deep coral called “Self-Starter.”

Love these ruffle sleeve top outfits!!! My favorite is the red checkered outfit. The pants are especially cute, cool and casual and pair perfectly with the accessories.
So happy you like them!
I was just checking out ad peplum top in one of your outfits from 2020. lol I asked you a question about styling babydolls and you answered my question about them. TUCK. ( I’m 5′ tall) I love those crops actually but not for me.
These are some of my favorite updates that you do Alexa!! I have worn almost nothing but designer for years. Someone once asked me if I had my clothes insured. And I maybe should have – I worked for a designer for years and fluctuated in weight, so I have tons of expensive clothes. But I always said you can get some good pieces that are not designer. I get an absolute thrill buying something that looks designer for much less. I think WalMart, etc, has come a long way and just love buying items at such a low price – I want to go out and brag to everyone! I wish I had followed you sooner!!
I’m glad you liked it!! It’s always a great day when you find an amazing looking outfit that looks like it should cost way more!!! 😆❤️
