A black wrap dress is a wardrobe essential, in my opinion. Dressed up or down, the wrap dress, especially in a solid neutral color, like black or navy, is a truly versatile piece. So much so that I recommend every woman have one.

Wrap Dresses: Versatile & Flattering
Wrap dresses are workhorses. They can be worn to work and both day and evening events, such as graduations, wedding/baby showers, or dinner parties. The wrap dress is an easy choice for a date night. And can be dressed up with accessories for a wedding.
Aside from just looking classic and polished, they are also very flattering. Apples will especially like the tie just under the bust to create that faux waist that I talk about in my Styling Tips for Plus Size Apple Shapes post.
Because you can get so much use out of them, I recommend investing in a wrap dress that is high quality. You will absolutely get a return on your investment and then some. When possible, choose a “true” wrap rather than “faux” wrap dress. And lastly, look for dresses that are easy to care for. Meaning, avoid dry clean only fabrics.
“True” vs “Faux” Wrap Dresses
To clarify, a “true” wrap dress is one in which the tie, neckline, and fit, can be adjusted when the dress is tied closed. Where as a “faux” wrap dress looks similar in style but can’t be adjusted because the pieces are sewn together in such a way as to create the illusion of a wrap dress without the adjustability. Often you will see inexpensive or budget options in this “faux” wrap style. One of the reasons is that the “faux” wrap dresses cost less to make as they use less fabric and they take less time to sew. So, if you can afford a “true” wrap dress, they are totally worth it.

From left to right, in order of my preference: Kiyonna – true wrap, EShakti – true wrap, ECI – faux wrap, Old Navy – faux wrap
Plus Size Wrap Dresses: Pick 1
Number 1 Pick – The plus size black wrap dress from Kiyonna comes in sizes 0X (10 – 12) – 5X (30 – 32). You can see it modeled on different sizes at Kiyonna. See how to find your correct size here, including size comparisons to other plus size brands. Why, thank you, Kiyonna! And it is also available in navy, cobalt blue, and plaid. The fabric has a nice finish that makes it suitable for casual, business, and even cocktail, making it my first choice.
These dresses are pretty easy to care for too. You can wash them inside out in cold water on the delicate setting. I also recommend using a laundry bag if you have one. As I mentioned in a previous post, the tie can get caught in the agitator of the washing machine, but the bag will protect it.
Plus Size Wrap Dresses: Pick 2
The plus size wrap dress from eShakti is my second choice. It is available in sizes 0 – 36W and custom sizes. While the fabric is good quality, it is more of a “casual knit” and therefore less versatile. Just my opinion. But I should also mention that the fabric is probably better suited for warm climates and “thermally sensitive” folks, as it is cotton with spandex, and is a bit more breathable than the Kiyonna poly blend. So it is a trade off between breathability and versatility.
The price is really great for the quality! As with all of the pieces from eShakti, I always recommend you spend the extra $9.95 to custom size and customize. You can take all of the necessary measurements yourself. You will be amazed by how well their garments fit for a nominal extra fee!
Now let’s get into some styling ideas!
Plus Size Wrap Dress Outfits
This first look is really just about adding a pop of color. Here I chose red pumps and coordinated with a Burberry check bag, but there is no need to coordinate. Just adding some color and/or a print is a great way to change things up with a staple wrap dress. For example, swap the Burberry bag with a leopard clutch and then you’re ready to go out for the evening. Simple and easy!

Hello
How do I order the outfits ?
Hi Charisse,
All of the items, including alternatives, are linked in the post above. You’ll have to order the pieces from their retailers. Thanks for reading!
I can’t keep my wrap dress from coming open at the bust. Does anyone else have this issue? What’s your go-to fix? I’ve seen fashion tape but haven’t invested in any. So far I’ve been using a tiny safety pin and am just hoping not to ruin the fabric.
I just ordered the wrap dress from Eshakti custom fit and with a discount code they gave me it only cost $40. That included the 9.95 custom fit. I am so happy. This is the third dress I have ordered and I love them! Thank you so much for your posts Alexa!
That’s so great to hear! I think the quality and fit you get for the price is just unbelievable! Love Eshakti!
